Drain Line Hydro Jetting in Whittier

Not every clog is in the main sewer. Kitchen, laundry, shower and floor drains have their own branch lines, and they clog for their own reasons. Drain line jetting uses smaller equipment matched to those pipes.

  • Residential & commercial
  • Pipe-first assessment
  • Clear scope before work

Branch lines are smaller — and treated differently

A main sewer lateral is usually 4 inches in diameter. The drains inside a home or business are smaller: 1½ to 2 inches for kitchen sinks and laundry, 2 to 3 inches for floor drains and some commercial fixtures. Jetting these lines safely calls for a smaller hose, a nozzle sized for the pipe, and lower pressure than a main-line job. The goal is the same — scour the full pipe wall — but with far more control.

The drains we clean most often

Kitchen sink lines

Grease, starch and coffee grounds form a sticky lining that a small hand snake can’t remove. Dishwashers and disposals add to the load.

Laundry standpipes

Lint and detergent residue combine into a dense mat — often the reason a washer overflows its standpipe mid-cycle.

Tub & shower drains

Hair bound with soap scum and conditioner; in older homes, scale in cast-iron or galvanized lines narrows the opening.

Floor & trench drains

Garages, laundry rooms and commercial kitchens collect grit, grease and sediment that settles in the trap and beyond.

How we access an interior line

The best access point depends on how the line was built. Options include a dedicated cleanout under the sink or on an exterior wall, the trap arm after removing the P-trap, or a roof vent for some stacks. Before starting, the technician protects cabinets and floors and plans where any splash-back can be contained. Hard-to-reach lines in slab homes — common across East and South Whittier — are typically worked from an exterior cleanout where one exists.

When another approach may be better

  • Very old galvanized pipe: heavy internal rust can leave little sound metal; replacement may be the real fix.
  • A single object in the trap: removing the trap is faster than jetting.
  • Clog is actually in the main: if several fixtures are involved, clearing one branch won’t help — see main sewer line cleaning.

Keeping branch drains clear

  • Scrape plates into the trash and wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing.
  • Run hot water for 15–20 seconds after using the disposal.
  • Use a lint trap on the washer discharge if your laundry line has clogged before.
  • Skip chemical drain openers — they rarely clear grease fully and can damage older metal pipes and anyone who later works on the line.

Signs a branch line needs jetting rather than a plunger

  • The same fixture has clogged more than twice in a year.
  • Plunging helps for a day or two, then the drain slows again.
  • Two fixtures that share a wall or branch (a sink and a tub, a sink and a washer) slow down together.
  • You can hear water gurgling in the wall after the fixture drains.
  • Water backs up into one basin of a double sink when the other is used.

Why not just use a hand snake?

A small hand auger is a good homeowner tool for a hair clog in a tub or a wad of paper near a toilet. In a branch line coated with grease, soap scum or scale, it opens a narrow path and leaves the rest. Jetting the branch removes the coating so the line drains at its full capacity again — the difference between “open” and “clean.”

Frequently asked questions

Is jetting too strong for my indoor pipes?

Interior drain jetting uses a smaller hose and lower pressure than a main line job. The technician sets pressure for the pipe size and material, and will recommend against jetting pipe that is too deteriorated.

Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging after I snake it?

A snake opens a hole through grease but leaves the coating on the pipe wall. The opening narrows again as new grease sticks to the old layer. Jetting removes the coating.

Can you jet a drain without a cleanout?

Often yes — through the trap arm or another access point. If a line is clogging frequently, adding a cleanout can make future maintenance faster and cheaper.

Are enzyme drain cleaners worth using?

Enzyme or bacterial products can help slow light organic buildup in maintenance use. They will not clear an existing hard grease blockage.
