Age alone doesn’t decide it
A 90-year-old clay lateral in good condition can be jetted safely. A 40-year-old line with a crushed section cannot. What matters is the material, its current condition, and how the jetting is done. That said, older pipes are more likely to have problems, so the older the home, the more valuable it is to know what’s down there before turning on high pressure.
Whittier’s housing eras — and the pipes that came with them
| Era | Where you’ll find it | Common sewer & drain materials |
|---|---|---|
| 1900s–1940s | Uptown, Hadley-Greenleaf, Central Park, College Hills | Clay laterals; cast-iron and galvanized interior drains |
| 1945–1970 | East Whittier, Friendly Hills, Whittwood, South Whittier, Valla | Clay laterals; cast iron under slab; occasional Orangeburg |
| 1970s–today | Infill, remodels, newer construction, repairs | ABS or PVC plastic |
These are general patterns. Individual homes vary — many have had partial repairs with modern pipe.
Pipe by pipe
Vitrified clay
Generally jettable when sound. Clay is hard and resists abrasion well, but its weak points are the joints, which can crack, shift or let roots in. A cracked bell or offset joint can be worsened by aggressive jetting. Controlled pressure and a camera check for older clay lines are good practice.
Cast iron
Often jettable, with caution. Cast iron corrodes from the inside, forming rough scale (tuberculation) that narrows the pipe. Jetting can remove scale, but if corrosion has thinned the pipe wall or created channels along the bottom, high pressure can break through. In slab homes from the 1950s and 60s, this is a common consideration.
Orangeburg (bituminous fiber)
Not a good jetting candidate. Orangeburg is made from wood pulp fiber bonded with pitch, and it was used widely in the postwar housing boom before falling out of use around the early 1970s. With age it softens, blisters and deforms into an oval shape. High-pressure water can tear it. If a camera shows Orangeburg, replacement or lining is usually the real answer.
Galvanized steel
Depends on remaining wall thickness. Common in older interior drains and vents, galvanized pipe rusts from the inside. Heavily rusted galvanized pipe may need replacement rather than cleaning.
ABS and PVC plastic
Generally jettable. Modern plastic handles jetting well when the correct pressure and nozzle are used. Watch for improper joints or transitions to older pipe.

Warning signs that jetting should wait
- Soil, gravel or pipe fragments came out of the line on a cable
- A camera shows cracks, offsets, separations, crushed or oval-shaped pipe
- The line backs up again immediately after being cleared
- Sinkholes or depressions in the yard along the sewer path
- Records show Orangeburg pipe
How a careful technician protects older pipe
- Asks about the home’s age, previous repairs and symptom history.
- Recommends a camera inspection when the condition is unknown.
- Chooses a nozzle suited to the material and problem.
- Starts at lower pressure and increases only as needed.
- Stops and explains if the pipe’s condition changes the plan.
The bottom line
Older Whittier pipes can often be jetted safely and effectively — it’s one of the best ways to restore flow in a narrowed cast-iron or root-infiltrated clay line. The key is knowing the pipe’s condition first. A short camera inspection is cheap insurance against turning a cleaning job into a repair job.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have Orangeburg pipe?
It’s most likely in homes built from the mid-1940s to around 1970. A camera inspection shows it clearly: dark, fibrous pipe that may look oval or blistered.
Can jetting break cast-iron pipe?
Sound cast iron tolerates controlled jetting. Badly corroded cast iron with a thinned wall can be damaged, so condition should be checked first.
Should I replace old pipes instead of jetting them?
Not automatically. If the pipe is sound and the problem is buildup, cleaning is the economical choice. Replacement makes sense for structural damage, Orangeburg, or pipe that is failing in multiple places.
